New Ladle and Maintenance Products
For
Iron Foundries
Background
Traditionally, Reno Refractories’ technical department has focused its energies on product developments for the heart of the foundries’ operational problems, the melting and holding furnaces. Reno provides unique products for iron transportation, ladles and troughs, desulphurization ladles, and inoculation ladles or convertor processes, for ductile shops. Also, we supply high quality, dependable, general-maintenance refractories for day to day needs, such as plastics, putties, coatings and mortars, which keep all of the remaining foundry’s equipment protected.
Today the minerals used most commonly for the foundry’s ladles, troughs, and maintenance refractory products are: bauxite, silicon carbide, brown fused alumina, and tabular alumina. Plastics, putties, coatings, and mortars depend upon phosphoric acid or sodium silicate based binding agents, while castables rely upon calcium alumina cements. Traditionally, these minerals, cements, and chemicals have been a must for these products.
Presently, due to the devaluation of our USA currency, and the high cost for energy, all of these imported raw materials used in foundry refractories have seen a sharp escalation in pricing, during the past three years. Our sources for these minerals and chemicals come from faraway places such as China, and Israel, or from countries located in South America or Europe. Refractory producers have seen as much as a 100% to 300% increase in costs placed upon these items during the past two years.
Project Goals
In order to become more competitive in the foundry market, we must utilize the best available technology to reduce costs to reduce the costs for ladle and maintenance refractories supplied to our valued customers. We shall do this by reducing or eliminating where possible our dependence on foreign supplied minerals, such as Chinese Bauxite, European Cements, and Scarce Phosphoric Acid. Rather, we shall develop products using domestically sourced minerals and non-traditional binder technologies. There are four basic product types that can fill the major application areas we service.
These new refractory products fit into the following categories:
Ø A Castable with easy placement and dry out features
Ø A Plastic product with high strengths and an extended shelf life
Ø Putty material for patching and repair of metal transport vessels
Ø A Coating product for reducing the adherence and buildup of slag on ladles
We will benefit in this endeavor by:
Ø Maintaining or surpassing the durability of the products currently in use
Ø Breaking the cycle of escalating refractory pricing due to foreign materials
Ø They will be offered at a lower cost due to the increased efficiencies
